After much debate, three metro YMCAs to close
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — YMCA members had just one month’s notice that three metro area branches were closing. Raytown, Mo., Independence, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., will all shut their doors.
The “Y” says declining enrollment and the high maintenance costs have forced them to make the tough decision. For members like Gary Leabo it will not only end a 30-year membership at the YMCA in Independence, but it will cut him off from long-time friends.
“I like the activity, and I like the workout,” Leabo said. “It’s been good to me mentally too and you make a lot of friends over the years. It’s a loss, not a lot of fun.”
The YMCA in Independence is scheduled to close for good on April 12.
