Rutgers coach says he’s sorry for actions caught on video
NEWARK, N.J. — Rutgers University coach MIke Rice, who was fired Wednesday as basketball coach apologized for the disturbing behavior shown in a video that was broadcast on ESPN on Tuesday.
“There’s no explanation for what’s on those films because there is no excuse for it. I was wrong,” said Rice. “I want to tell everyone who has believed in me… that I”m deeply sorry for the pain and hardship I’ve caused them.”
The video came from former assistant Eric Murdock. On it, Rice is seen bullying players — shoving, pushing and throwing basketballs at them and shouting verbal abuse.
“I’ve let so many people down,” Rice said Wednesday morning. “My players. My administration. Rutgers University. The fans. My family, who is sitting in their house huddled around because of the fact that their father was an embarrassment to them. And it’s troubling.”
Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey praised the decision by Rutgers to fire the coach.
