Circus elephant shot in neck will recuperate in Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A circus elephant shot in Mississippi early Tuesday morning will come to Missouri to recover.

Someone shot Carol, the 8,000 pound Asian circus elephant while crews with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus were setting up at an arena in Tupelo, Miss.

Carol is 39-years old and veterinarians expect her to fully recover from the neck and shoulder wound. She’s coming to Springfield, Missouri to recuperate.

Police say the gunman drove past the arena at about 2 a.m. and fired into the area.

Tupelo Police Department said the crime would be pursued as a federal offense under the Endangered Species Act
