Clerk shot after helping robbery victim in KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police are investigating a robbery and shooting late Wednesday afternoon.

According to witnesses, a man was trying to rob a woman of her purse in the parking lot of the Food Shop convenience store at East Gregory Boulevard and Cleveland Avenue around 3:15 p.m.

Police say a clerk ran into the parking lot to help and was shot by the suspect who then fled the scene.

An officer, who was near the intersection, heard the gunshots and saw the man running. The officer was able to catch up with the man about a block away and the man was taken into custody.

The clerk was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Loyal customers say the clerk is a well liked man who remembers each customers who comes in and always greets them with a smile.

One woman says the clerk told her Tuesday his wife is seven months pregnant.

Police say they are still searching for a second suspect.
