LEAWOOD, Kan. -- Students at Brookwood Elementary in Leawood, Kan., won't be able to play on the playground during recess on Tuesday. That's because someone torched it late last night.
Brookwood Elementary is in the Shawnee Mission School District and is located off 103rd Street near Mission Road.
A neighbor called firefighters around 9:30 p.m. Monday and they quickly put the fire out.
But the flames had already caused thousands of dollars in damage.
A brand new playground like the one that burned costs on average around $20,000 to $30,000, so it'll be expensive to repair or replace, whatever school administrators decide to do.
It's been awhile since someone set a school playground on fire in Johnson County. The last playground arson happened at Santa Fe Trail Elementary in Oveland Park in January of 2012. Before that, there was rash of playground fires at six different elementary schools during the summer of 2011.
Firefighters tell said the fire marshall will be at the playground later Tuesday morning to determine the exact cause of the fire and see if he can collect any evidence to determine who might have set it.
If you know anything about this, you are urged to call police.
