INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A William Southern third grade student is back in class after returning from Washington D.C. with an award from the Department of Transportation. Nine-year-old Reilly Taylor, or RJ as he's known to his friends and classmates, is one of 12 students recognized as winners in the 2013 "Be Ready. Be Buckled," art contest.

Taylor flew on an airplane for the first time to recieved the award, he also was given a monetary prize and got his artwork framed.

"I drew a truck with animals in the front, because that’s not something you would see every day and it would catch your attention longer so you would actually get the message," said Taylor.

The contest is geared at educating children on highway safety and urging commercial drivers to buckle up on every trip.
