RAYTOWN, Mo. -- Raytown Police were called to the scene of a shooting early Friday morning, where they found a man dead in a pickup truck.

The victim has been identified as Kyle D. Smotherman, 31, from Raytown, police said.

The owner of the truck told them in lived about two blocks away. He said he heard sounds coming from outside his home. So, he went outside, armed with a handgun.

The man said he found Smotherman inside his truck, trying to steal it.

The truck's owner said he confronted the 31-year-old. He says he thought he saw Smotherman pointing a gun at him, so he fired his gun at him in the truck.

Smotherman drove off, struck a fence and was found by police, dead a couple blocks away in the 5900 block of Crescent.

A neighbor says the truck was parked right by his neighbor's bedroom window.

"From what the family says, he would hear you if you messed with a rock in his front yard, so he definitely picked the wrong house, apparently," said Sean Lee.
