Watson leads at Watson Challenge

PARKVILLE, Mo. — It’s got his name on it, and after one round of golf on a course he helped design, Tom Watson has staked an early claim to capturing a the trophy that goes to the winner of the Watson Challenge.

Watson shot a 3-under par 69 in the first round of plat at The National in Parkville, Mo. That leads the field in the tournament that features 48 of the best golfers in the Kansas City metro area.

Watson had 5 birdies and 2 bogeys, and leads Ryan Zech by one stroke.

Bryan Norton and Clay Ederer are tied at 1-under par.

Sean Daugherty and Curtis Yonke are 3 shots back at even par after the first round.

Second round play begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m. Watson is set to tee off with two others at 10 a.m.
