KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An urgent warning from a Northland neighborhood's association -- numerous residents report strangers asking strange questions.

Kevin, who asked to go by just his first name, said he answered the door to his Northland home last week to a woman.

"She was kind of just looking around the neighborhood and said, 'Oh, hi. I'm the one teaching all the kids in the neighborhood,'" he said.

A bit thrown off, Kevin said he told her he wasn't interested in what she was selling.

But that's when he said the conversation got stranger.

She asked if other homes in the neighborhood had kids.

"She picked up her belongings, her bags and her books, and said 'Can I come in and sit?' and started to walk towards the door like she was going to come in the house, and I stepped on my front porch and I said, 'No you can't.'"

But Kevin isn't the only one with the odd encounter. The nearby Mark Brooking First Pool Association put out a status Monday that read "urgent" about a potential issue.

Some said two women came to their door instead of one. Some said the car plates were Kansas and not Arizona.

But police don't care what the details are -- that you should be alert.

"Some of them may be legitimate, but obviously some of them probably are not, so we just have to err on the side of caution with that," said Officer Jason Cooley.

Cooley said the case is highly suspicious, especially with the questions being asked.

Police say there are things you can do if someone is at the door you don't know: don't answer or talk from behind the door. But ultimately, officers say trust your instincts.
