Grandmother speaks out about abuse of granddaughter, 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The parents of a 2-year-old girl have been charged in connection with the child’s malnourished condition and injuries, including open wounds.
Arthur L. Easterwood, 33, and Telecia T. Hooks, 22, each face two counts of abuse or neglect of a child. They appeared in Jackson County Court Thursday morning.
According to court documents, Easterwood and Hooks, took the child to a Kansas hospital, where medical staff were concerned by the child’s condition. The girl had four open wounds on her head and indications of earlier fractures to her ribs and arm. She and her brother were taken into protective custody.
She claimed Hooks is the one abusing the little girl, not her son. Florice Easterwood said she even called Social Services with concerns about the child’s safety.
“I cry,” Easterwood said. “I cry and begged and pleaded with the welfare people to take (the child) from them. I say, ‘What are you all going to do, wait ’till she kills the baby?'”
She says Hooks and her son used to live with her.
“When they were staying with me, my husband was playing with the baby and she (Hooks) slapped that baby so hard because my husband said ‘hi’ to her and told her to turn her head,” Florice Easterwood said. “She’ll comb the baby’s head and the baby won’t keep still so she hit the baby in the head with a brush.”
Easterwood said she warned her son that ‘this day’ would come.
Relatives of Hooks did not want to go on camera, but said they don’t know who is responsible for the baby’s injuries. Hooks’ step mother said if Hooks is to blame, why did Easterwood stand by and let the abuse happen. Easterwood’s mother offered an answer.
“He is protecting (Hooks),” Florice Easterwood said. “He is protecting her. He’s always trying to protect her. And I told him one day this day here was going to happen.”
Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $250,000 for each defendant.
