Man, 24, charged with attempted murder in hammer beating of mother

OLATHE, Kan. -- Prosecutors have charged a 24-year-old man with attempted murder after police say he beat his mother in the head with a hammer.

Police said Majok Wany Anyit hit his mother E. Akol in the head numerous times in the head with a hammer on Tuesday, June 25. Akol was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Olathe beatingPolice were called to the apartment complex near 153rd Court and Brentwood in Olathe at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Akol, 48, lives there with her five sons. They range in age from 10 to 25 years.

A family member told FOX 4 that one of the younger sons called 911 to report that his 24-year-old brother had attacked his mother. The 24-year-old is reportedly the second oldest son.

The woman's sister told FOX 4 that on Monday the young man had been accused of stealing money from one of his brothers.

"I'm so worried because I don't know what happened to her," said Kathleen Akot, the woman's sister. "First when I came out I was crying but now I just hold my tears because I see the kids."

Anyit has been charged with first-degree attempted murder. His bond was set at $500,000.
