MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — A seven-year-old boy who was shot in the head while walking with his dad to watch Fourth of July fireworks in Midlothian, Va., died on Friday.

On Thursday night, at about 9 p.m., Brendon Mackey, 7, suddenly fell to the ground, but no one knew what happened.

It wasn’t until the boy was taken to the hospital that doctors discovered a bullet wound in the top of his head.

Police said it’s unlikely someone fired at the boy, but instead said the bullet likely came from someone shooting in a celebratory manner.
