KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Thousands of school nutrition professionals visited Kansas City's Bartle Hall for a convention centered on making school lunches the healthiest and tastiest they can be.

Foods are expected to be more nutritious to help combat obesity in children.

"Kids are like adults and taste is what it's about. I believe it's all about flavors," said Gary Vonck, with the School Nutrition Association. "When you're changing things -- especially when you get into vegetables and things of that nature, you need to enhance the flavor so that we can draw the kids in and they'll eat the products."

Presentation is also key. Presenting attractive, appealing dishes to young eaters is believed to play a positive role in getting kids to take a bite.

Having foods that are kid-friendly is also key, Vonck said. Flavorful finger foods are essential in enticing children to eat healthier items.

School districts throughout the Kansas City metro were at the convention shopping for healthier, tastier ways to feed metro students.
