KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Missouri wins a battle to convince businesses to cross the state line. Freightquote left Kansas for Missouri, and on Tuesday they celebrated their new $44 million headquarters located at I-435 and State Line in Kansas City.

Freightquote helps companies move products by looking at multiple carriers and finding companies the cheapest solution freight rate, helping to move more than a million shipments every year.

After spending the first 15 years in Lenexa, Kan., company officials decided they had outgrown their current building and needed to move. But where to?

Company officials loved the area at 435 and State Line because of its access to a growing population, plus it's 1,200 employees wouldn't have much further to drive to get to work. But the area they looked at had never before been developed, which made it expensive to build there.

"The site had a lot of challenges," said Tim Shaffer, Executive VP RED Brokerage. "We basically carved out the side of a hillside to accommodate this building, so there were some extroardinary costs associated with building at this location, and consequently, we needed some state and local help to make it happen. And that's one of the reasons this site had not been developed prior to this time because it was so expensive.

To help with the cost, Mayor Sly James offered Freightquote tax abatement to develop the site, like building massive retaining walls on site. And the state offered $7 million in tax credits to build.

"The most important thing for Freightquote was to be close to their current employment base and be able to recruit from a location that was beneficial to access to future employees, so we looked at a number of locations in both Kansas and Missouri and this location just happened to be a strategic fit for them from that perspective."

There is also room here on site to expand and hire up to 900 more employees.
