KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged in the murder of a Blue Summit man, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Ricky Sines, 39, faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

Roger Krout was found lying in a pool of blood on Tuesday when deputies arrived. Krout was hit in the head three times with a sharp object, the medical examiner’s office said.

Court documents showed that investigators found a shingler’s hammer, with what appeared to be blood, on the ax end near the man’s home. A witness told police Sines had mowed Krout’s grass, was paid, and then drank with him afterward.

Krout’s nephew, Neil Krout, described his uncle as a nice man.

“My uncle was a sweet, kind-hearted, gullible guy,” he said.

Neighbors who knew Krout had similar things to say about him.

“Roger was a nice guy,” Joe Pace said. “He’d do anything for anybody. He’d give people rides. He’d loan people money.”

Another neighbor who didn’t give his name agreed.

“If you ever needed anything, you didn’t have to steal from him, he’d give it to you,” he said. “That’s how good of a man he was.”

According to court documents after drinking with Krout, Sines told the witness he was going back to visit him. Court documents reveal the witness followed Sines to the elderly man’s home and later witnessed him hit the man in the head with an ax.

“How anybody can do this is just absolutely mind boggling,” Neil Krout said.

Prosecutors have requested a $500,000 bond.
