DETROIT — It’s a 5-game series, so the Royals still have time to rebound, but it’ll take some doing if they play the rest of the series like they played against the Detroit Tigers in the opener Thursday night.

The Tigers won the first game of an all-important series for the Royals by a 4-1 score, as Detroit starter Anabel Sanchez handcuffed the Royals offense after giving up a single run in the first inning.

The Royals are now 8-and-a-half games behind the division leading Tigers and 5-and-a-half back in the American League wildcard race.

Prince Fielder hit a 2-run homer off Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie, with Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera providing the other two Tiger RBIs with singles.

The two teams will meet in a double-header on Friday with Danny Duffy and James Shields set to get the pitching start for the Royals.

The Royals have lost three straight, their longest losing streak since falling five times in a row prior to the All-Star break.
