INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- A small, but suspicious wooden box brought business to a halt along a normally busy, two block stretch of Noland Road in Independence Tuesday. The package, left in a Super 8's parking lot around 6:18 am, forced more than a dozen businesses to abruptly close for the day.

Rachel Foley's law firm took a hard hit.

"It is when you're losing business in this economy. Clients are coming in. It's the initial intake and if they decide to go to somebody else that's potentially my overhead for the month," says Foley.

From laundromats, dry cleaning services to big banks, they all suddenly shut their doors as the police department's bomb squad sent three robots at a time to approach the box that had wires sticking out of it.

"We've got a doctor next door, Driving Ambitions next door, they all lost potential clients today and business," says Rachel Foley.

Workers at the Super 8 told Fox 4 the front desk clerk received a threatening phone call.
After 11 hours, the police department's robot dismantled what investigators call "a dangerous package" and Noland Road between 39th Street and I-70 finally reopened.

Why did it take all day?

"Primarily because the package seemed authentic to us," Tom Gentry, spokesperson for the Independence Police Department. "Based on everyone's consensus to what they saw, we needed to take that time and precaution."

Police will take fingerprints off the box in hopes of finding whoever left it in the motel's parking lot.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Independence Police Department or the Tips Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS (8477).
