LENEXA, Kan. -- A taxi cab driver has been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Lenexa police said they received a call on Sunday evening from someone saying a driver was driving erratically near 87th and Quivira.
Police said the driver was followed into Shawnee where she was arrested at 71st and Garnett after failing a field sobriety test. FOX 4 is not identifying the driver at this time and will not until formal charges are filed.
Bill George, the CEO of 10/10 Taxi, said the driver was not on duty and did not have passengers in the taxi at the time of her arrest. He said the driver was an independent contractor who rents the taxi and was using it Sunday on her personal time.
Abass Mohamed, a Yellow Cab driver, said incidents like this cast a bad light on the business.
"It looks so bad for all the cab drivers, it doesn't matter 10/10 or Yellow, it looks so bad for all the cab drivers in Kansas City," said Mohamed.
Gabriel Nyajah, who also drives for Yellow Cab, said that people expect cab drivers not to drink and drive. In fact, he said that's why they're often called to get people under the influence home safely.
George said the driver's car has been taken away and he wants the public to know she won't be behind the wheel of any of his cabs again.
