KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police have identified the eight-year-old girl who was struck and killed by an ice cream truck Friday evening as Lillian E. Simon. The accident happened around 5 p.m. near 108th and North Harrison in Kansas City, Mo.

Police said Simon was seen running down the sidewalk on Harrison Street, trying to get the truck to stop.

They say the truck stopped at the corner of Northeast 108th Street, but the driver never saw the girl.

He told police he was waiting on a boy to get some money from his house, when the driver rolled forward to turn the corner and struck the girl. He said he had no idea the girl was in front of his truck.

A witness told FOX 4 she saw it happen and ran to help and stayed with the girl until the ambulance arrived.

Police say the driver stayed at the scene and waited for authorities. Police said they are confident this was an accident, but they will continue to investigate, although no charges are expected to be filed.
