KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- At least two students are in police custody after a gun was found inside Hickman Mills Junior High School. School district spokeswoman Ebony Walker said that the gun was found on a female student at about 10 a.m. on Friday.

Walker said that a student texted a parent about the gun and that parent called the school principal. The classroom was placed on lockdown while the incident was investigated but the rest of the school remained in session.

“It makes me nervous,” Heather McPike, mother, said. “It makes me frustrated. It makes me angry.”

Walker said the school is investigating to determine how the girl managed to smuggle in the gun despite medal detectors being in place. Walker added that soon the school will be implementing "Tip Text" -- a service that allows students to text a number should they see something happening in their classroom or building.

McPike said while the school may increase their security measures, parents are ultimately responsible for their children.

"The gun came from home," she said. "I want the parents to start disciplining their children, watching them, checking them. Pay attention to your kids because it's not the teachers responsibility to raise a child."
