LONG BEACH, Calif. — A teacher was stabbed to death as she monitored her students at a park during recess last Friday. Kellye Taylor, 53, was allegedly attacked by 50-year-old Steven Brown at Orizaba Park and stabbed in the upper body according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department.
Immediately after the attack witnesses were able to point officers in the direction that Brown was headed and he was arrested at a nearby shopping center. Police said that Taylor was the only victim and that no students or other teachers were harmed.
Brown was booked for murder and detectives are still trying to uncover a motive into the attack. The release states the Taylor is the grandmother of Brown’s children, but they did not specify any familial relationship.
Taylor was a teacher at Huntington Academy, a private school that was located across the street from the park. KTLA reports that a vigil was held Saturday night, whose sister said the tragedy has been a nightmare.
“It’s like a nightmare. It’s like I want to wake up from a bad dream,” Mary Bryant said. “But in reality, it is what it is. My sister’s no longer with us.”
