LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. -- The Lee's Summit West Football team is used to talking x's and o's and is proficient at picking up big chunks of yards on the football field. But on Saturday players were picking up and running mattresses at Hope House's two metro shelters.

"It makes me feel really good that I can help someone you know that doesn't have what they need," senior captain Evan Martin said.

Forget a weekend day of sleeping in. The players first had practice on Saturday morning before taking part in the service project.

"You know, they're giving up their Saturday, they've been at practice this morning so they're tired and they have other things that they could be doing and instead they're going to be here helping us out,” Hope House’s CEO, MaryAnne Metheny, said.

One-by-one these guys helped haul away 122 old mattresses and replaced them with new ones, easing a burden on Metheny’s staff.

"For my staff to do that it would take them several days," Metheny said.

The Titans are accustomed to success and have eight wins against one loss this year. But seniors Evan Martin and Reagan Donnelly said that they want to make impact both on and off the field.

“That's what one of our goals was this season, Coach Boehm really emphasized that we give back to the community because we've been very blessed as a program," Martin said.

"We try and not make us the center we try and make our community the center,” Donnelly said.

It’s a service the helps some in the community rest a little easier with the gift of a comfortable bed for a good night’s sleep. The Titans take to the field again on Wednesday night against Belton.
