OLATHE, Kan. – A Lenexa teacher pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sodomy involving teenage victims, Wednesday morning.
Jeremy John Way, 42, worked as a math and science teacher at Saint James Academy in Lenexa, and also volunteered as a Sunday school teacher at the Harvest Ridge Covenant Church in Shawnee. There he taught high school classes, although he never taught those classes by himself.
Way, first appeared in District Court on April 30 of this year, was charged with two counts of sodomy involving two different 14-year-old victims. Police launched an investigation after parents discovered their son had responded to a Craigslist ad.
The prosecutor says Way used Craigslist ads to solicit sex from the two 14-year-old victims, who were not students of either school where he worked. Way's lawyer said both boys answered ads on Craigslist intended for adults.
The pastor of the church where Way taught, told Fox 4 back in April that they did run a background check on him when he first started working there, but at that time they had found nothing unusual.
Way is scheduled to be sentenced on January 21. Way faces a maximum penalty of more than 20 years in prison, on each count. Way also must now register as a sex offender.
