PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. – An elderly woman was taken to the hospital after receiving life-threatening injuries in a wreck on Monday afternoon.
Police were called to a traffic accident at 7700 State Line Road in Prairie Village, Kan., just after 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Witnesses of the incident said the woman drove through a grocery store parking lot, hit another vehicle, and then struck a tree.
The woman, who officers said was born almost 90 years ago in 1924, was later pulled from the wreckage and taken to an area hospital with critical injuries. It took crews about 20 minutes to free the woman from the vehicle.

Sounds like she had a medical lapse at the wheel to me .

This sounds bad, but if I were 90yrs old, I would want my family to look out for me and make sure I am able to drive. I wouldn’t want to hurt people on the road because I can’t drive.

I was there. Luckily she struck a tree in front of the gas station. If she hadn’t the gas pumps weren’t far from there.

I know you’ve kidding, but no, the tree is not ok. It was completely ripped out of the ground and it wasn’t a small tree. I’m amazed she survived that wreck.

I think it’s completely disgusting how this incident was displayed as a light, laughing matter. A woman is critically injured and all you seem to care about is the shock value of it all. Where is your compassion in journalism? Shameful.

As someone who was there to see the driver speeding down the wrong side of the street, hitting the curb, watching the car go airborne, hitting a tree, a wheel and debris flying everywhere, it was no laughing matter. It was a shock to learn later that it was a 90 year old driver.

It would be nice to get an update on this woman. She probably never had an accident in her life and now something horrible like this happens. I know several older drivers and even one older than her, and I ride with them without a worry in the world. This sounds like a medical issue though.

Thank you to those who are concerned and have pointed out the serious of the matter. The woman involved is my grandmother. She is currently recovering, and has several injuries (2 fractured ribs, a fractured ankle and a fractured hip). We are still uncertain as to what caused her to lose control of her vehicle; however, the doctore’s suspect is could have been a mini stroke. At 89 years old, my grandmother, is still very independent, and although my family have had concerns about her driving, simply due to her increased age, she hasn’t had any prior major accidents such as this. We would appreciate prayers as she recovers and we thank God that she survived and that no one else was injured.

Thank you for the update, I was one of the first on the scene helping with her and had been keeping prayers and wondering how she was.

I am glad your grand am is alright! Encourage her to keep on driving. It would be a slap in the face to take her driving privileges away!!

Keisa, my prayers are with you and your family. I know your grandmother, well, and she is a very strong and independent 90 year old. To look at her you would think she is much younger than that. She will survive this!
