Below are Shawn and Russ' favorite DVD releases in 2013.

#1: THE LIFE OF PI (PG-13) Fox

My top pick for the Best DVD of 2013 is also my pick for the Best Film of 2012, "The Life of Pi."

Unfilmable. When Yann Martel’s fantasy adventure novel “The Life of Pi” was published in 2001, it was just that. But thanks to recent developments in cinematic technology and a daring filmmaker named Ang Lee, “The Life of Pi” is now a visually stunning and absorbing movie experience. Yes, in this rare case, if you can get the 3-D version, it's worth it. The story involves a teenaged Indian boy who endures a shipwreck and is stranded on a lifeboat with a man-eating Bengal tiger. It’s both an exciting and ripping yarn and a thoughtful exploration of spirituality. “The Life of Pi” is a film that will be studied for years to come.

The best home release of 2013 is Pixar's Monster University. Although I wasn't a huge fan of the movie the way Disney and Pixar packaged this home release is impressive and even not classic Pixar is extremely watchable for multiple viewings.

The Blu-ray set is packed with extra features:

Campus Life – What’s it like being on a production crew at Pixar?

Story School – A documentary that examines the challenges of creating a prequel.

Scare Games

Welcome to MU – A look at the Monsters University campus.

Music Appreciation – A look at Randy Newman’s scoring process.

Scare Tactics – How the MU animation team worked.

Color and Light – A look at the creation of the colorscripts

Paths to Pixar – MU Editon: Members of the MU crew tell their own compelling backstories.

Furry Monsters: A Technical Retrospective.

Four Deleted Scenes.

“The Blue Umbrella” – A fantastic animated short.

Additional Bonus Features include Audio Commentary, Promo Picks, College Campaign, Theatrical Campaign, Set Flythroughs, Art Gallery and more.
