50 days until spring: Simulated sunlight could be your answer to winter sadness
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you’ve been feeling sad or irritable lately, you could be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD.
It’s all because of a lack of sunlight during the winter months.
Bed, Bath and Beyond, Walmart, Staples and other online retail sites sell LED phototherapy light, which simulates sunlight, hitting the back of your retina and helps cut down on the chemicals that make you feel like hibernating.
Nancee Blum, University of Iowa social work specialist, recommends turning on the lamp for about 30 minutes each day at your work desk.
She says people can feel happier in as little as two weeks.
“This is always a tough time of year, but this year is really the worst,” Blum said.
Experts also recommend exercise to help fight the blues.
“You’re making chemistry in the body that helps alleviate stress, helps alleviate anxiety,” said Jake Villhauer, a personal trainer.
“SAD” usually alleviates when the days get longer, and as of January 28, Spring is only 50 days away.
