LEE, Fla. — After the Madison County Sheriff’s Department learned that two fugitives from separate counties may be in their jurisdiction, the fugitives tried to stay one step, or paddle, ahead.

A news release indicates Garrett Eure and Jessie Bryant learned that the officers had located the home they were staying in on Monday. They in turn fled on foot and went to the Withlacoochee River where they traveled down the river by canoe.

A canine unit discovered where they had entered the river and a dive team eventually located both of the men in the canoe and took them into custody. Eure was wanted on an escape charge from Alachua County stemming from armed burglary. Bryant was wanted for a St. Lucie County burglary of a dwelling  charge that included assault and battery by strangulation.

The woman they were allegedly staying with, Cassandra Zabriskie, was also charged with resisting arrest, though the release does not mention if she was in the canoe as well.
