CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Florida woman who wants to live “off the grid” has been told by city officials she’s not allowed.
According to WBBH, Cape Coral resident Robin Speronis refuses to use the city’s power and water services. She’s been given a month to start paying for the city’s sewer system or pay the consequences.
Her house runs off solar panels and she uses treated rain water to meet her basic needs. She flushes the toilet using rain water, although she doesn’t pay for use of the sewer system. The city wants that changed.
“I’m choosing to live without being dependent on the system,” Speronis said. “I never have to worry about that bill coming in.”
During a recent hearing, Speronis was found guilty of not being hooked up to an approved water supply. City code officials said it’s their job to make sure everyone follows the rules.
Speronis has a month to comply, although she said she won’t.
“I don’t have to justify my life,” she said. “They have to. That’s the way our system of justice works. They have justify it. I don’t.”
It was not immediately clear what consequences Speronis will face if she goes against city instructions.
