KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two police officers remain hospitalized after a drunk driver slammed into their cruiser at 43rd & The Paseo Sunday night. Emergency crews had to cut the officers out of their vehicle.

The driver who crashed into the police cruiser had a blood alcohol level of .17, which is more than double the legal limit when he was arrested and taken in for questioning.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. as the officers were backing up another crew on a traffic stop.

"It's tough whenever you come upon a scene when fellow officers are injured, but you have to stay tough to get the job done,"  Sgt. Bill Mahoney with Kansas City police said.

One officer lost consciousness for a time and was taken to the hospital for overnight observation.  A second officer remains in the hospital with broken ribs.

No word on what charges the driver faces.
