SAN DIEGO, Calif. — An 18-year-old gorilla named Imani gave birth to a 4.6 lb baby gorilla via c-section this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari.
It was a rare procedure, but vets say it was obviously the right decision. Imani went into labor but failed to progress, so they decided to perform the c-section. It was her first birth.
“We think that the health of the fetus would have been compromised if we’d delayed surgery any longer,” said Nadine Lamberski, a veterinarian at San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
The infant gorilla is in intensive care, getting fluids and oxygen.
“She’s extremely strong, she can grasp, she kicks, she’s vocal, has a very strong suckle reflex. She looks around. She holds her own head up, which is pretty amazing,” said Lamberski.
With this newest addition, the zoo now has eight gorillas.
