GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. -- A local stay-at-home mom was chosen to take part in an online competition, and is now working on blogging her way to the top.

It’s called ‘Creating with the Stars’ and is one of the biggest annual competitions in the blog world for DIY bloggers.

Gwen Hefner, who is from the Kansas City area, was chosen as one of the top participants.

"I've been making things probably my whole life, I love making and creating," said Hefner, who is known in the blogging community as the 'Makerista.’ "I’m a stay at home mom living in the suburbs and this has just been a really great outlet for me, and a way to kind of use my creativity and hopefully inspire others to make things themselves too.”

Hundreds of people submitted projects. 12 "rookie" bloggers were chosen by a company called East Coast Creative to team up with 12 seasoned bloggers acting as mentors. Hefner is now in the top nine after three people were knocked off this week.

"I make a lot of things for a house, anything from home decor to birthday parties, I love creating invitations and simple pretty parties," said Hefner.

The contest consists of four rounds of DIY challenges. Each round the contestants are given a task, and anyone can go online and vote. The bottom-three are knocked off each week until one person is crowned the winner.

"It's just a great way to share what you're doing with the world," Hefner added.

She started blogging last July. She blogs about things she makes, and gets her inspiration from what she sees around her.

"I take pictures all the time, I could be at the weirdest place and see some old floor tile or something and just snap a picture," she said. "You can be inspired by things everywhere; you just have to be aware."
