KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two families and a man escaped an early morning apartment fire in the old northeast neighborhood on Tuesday.
The fire started around 4 a.m. near Minnie Street and Park Avenue.
John Tusa lived on the first floor. He described waking up to the sound of fire.
"Just the noise of the fire woke me up, and I rushed into the front room," he said. "The fire was already engulfed in the hall, and my front door was on fire. And I just looked around in my TV room and I've got a lot of newspapers and books and electrical -- and that stuff went immediately."
Everyone managed to escape without injury. Firefighters said they think the fire started on the first floor, but the cause is still under investigation. It's unknown at this time if the apartment complex had working smoke alarms.
Firefighters continue to investigate. The Red Cross is assisting those affected.
