TONGANOXIE, Kan. -- Firefighters rescued a 105-year-old woman from a house fire early Tuesday morning in Tonganoxie, Kan. The fire started at a home on 6th street.
The woman's nephew, Jackson Jarrett, who lives next door, said he called 911 after smelling smoke just before 5 a.m. Jarrett said he heard his aunt screaming for help, but the heavy smoke kept him from reaching her. He said he is grateful for the quick response of firefighters who rescued his aunt.
Firefighters were also grateful and relieved to have saved a life.
"I have been on the fire department for 26 years, and this is one of the proudest days," Fire Chief David Bennett said. "I am very proud of my firefighters."
The woman was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The cause is still under investigation.
