(CNN) – An Ohio teacher is caught on camera grabbing a student in an apparent fit of anger. The student’s parents are enraged.

Anthony and Autumn Nelson are still stunned by what happened to their 6-year-old son Ian last Wednesday. In a video they provided to us, the Riverdale School kindergartner is walking down the hallway to go to the bathroom.

The surveillance camera then shows his teacher, Barb Williams, confront him as he steps out of the bathroom. The teacher grabs Ian and pins him up against the wall, then grabs him by the face. It doesn’t end there. She picks him up by his shirt and his head flops back.

The boys father, Anthony Nelson, told CNN “we thought it was just a little incident that happened, and that’s what the school made it out to sound like. And then all of a sudden we get this video today and this is just outrageous.”

The Nelsons say Ian had a bruise to the back of his head. A letter Tuesday from Riverdale Superintendent Eric Hoffman informed Barb Williams that she is suspended for ten days without pay.

In his words: “your repeated use of physical force was completely unwarranted and unprofessional.”

The Nelsons want her terminated. They plan to take the video to the Hancock County Sheriff’s office to pursue criminal charges.

Ian has been moved to a different kindergarten class here at the school and seems to be happier, but his parents worry this incident will have a long-term impact on him.

“He’s scared of her. Even going to the school next year or the year after, he will still have to see her if she is present in the building. That’s probably going to scare him.” Said his mother, Autumn Nelson.

Our attempts to reach the superintendent by email have not been successful. His letter to the teacher warned Williams that she’ll be fired if there is any future misconduct.

I would have to know the circumstances surrounding this incident – why did she feel it necessary to act this way – is he a problem child everyday? Without the whole story it is difficult to assess – on the other hand, no matter what, the teacher was definitely out of control – the guidance counselor or principal should have been made aware if there were a problem – We cannot have teachers taking this kind of action on their own – I never hit or paddled my children when they were growing up – just eye to eye with them to tell them what they did was unacceptable and what would happen next time they did it
now they know it was not acceptable – never had any issues after those kind of eye to eye, calm talks – and I’m not saying my children were perfect – but both are successful business people today –

No, it is not hard to assess. If I can not legally do that to you, my co-workers, the people I ride transit with, or the guy who sells me my lunch, a teacher in the position of power and authority over the children in her care, can not either. The are laws against this.
Call your children, you might be surprized to learn that while you did not interact with your kids this way, maybe they where physically assaulted by their teachers or coaches. Presumably they where students before there was security cameras in the schools?

Maybe the kids is a problem child. The teacher had NO right to grab and treat this kid this way. Is the kids did some merging like this to a teacher he will get kicked out no matter what. Now this is on video. She NEVER should of done this. Since it’s on video and there’s proof they need to fire her and arrest her period

has she been fired yet> ? When googling this.. Ohio teacher gets fired pulled up several cases where a teacher in Ohio was fired for saying we dont need another liberal black president.. I dont know those stories.. but if you can get fired for saying something stupid… why arent you terminated with charges filed for abusing a child? Is the school system seriously standing by this teacher? what does that say about them? This woman put her hands on a baby for no reason, jacked him up and abused him. My heart goes out to Ian and his family. I am sure it is hard to stay patient when you want to avenge your child. This schools system needs to do the right thing NOW!!

He is a lil guy! She is obese and 10 times his size! If I were his mom, I would make sure she NEVER touched another child again! The news report would’ve read a little differently though……. If he was being disobedient there is a way to correct him…… grabbing him and yanking on him and getting in his face is NOT the answer! BIG BEAST!

  • KatyJane

Fired? How about criminally charged and then fired?
Don’t must USA states have mandatory reporting for suspected child abuse? Is it not reasonable to assume that if you can watch the video of the child being assaulted that you are expected, legally and morally, to call the police and report the incident?
    Where are the professional ethics?
    Where are the Adults?
A Teacher is in a position of power and authority over the child.

Reblogged this on Serve Him in the Waiting and commented:
I know there are a lot of good teachers, but there are also people in the school system who have no business working with kids. I don’t care what this teacher’s excuses are, this is criminal and I hope that Sheriff will take up the criminal charges against her. This is physical assault. Period. Caught on camera, and undeniable. I don’t think I could contain myself if this was done to my child.

There is nothing this child could have done to deserve this teacher’s behavior. Her behavior is abusive and teaches this child to react to situations with violence, besides scaring him and any emotional damage she may have caused. This teacher needs to be removed from her position and any other teaching positions or working with children in any capacity should not be an option.. Shame on you Bully Barb..

You bunch of over-pampering aristocratic snobs! Get over it! You do more harm than good by sweating the small stuff. You tell this child this should never have happened to him and he misses the point and doesn’t feel “corrected” for doing the wrong thing, Then he becomes another entitled character such as yourselves! YOU are destroying society!

  • Denise

Many of you apparently did not attend Catholic School. We students got away with nothing, the nuns and parish priest made sure of it. You were either paddled in front of the class, made to stand outside the class with your head and toes touching the walls, pulled by your ear to the office, or your fingers smacked with a ruler. And when you got home, you were lucky if your parents only sent you to your room without supper vs. getting the paddle again. And NO, we were not “ruined for life with issues” because of the discipline.
With that being said, it would help in the article about what the teacher claims the boy was doing. I do feel sorry for the little guy, because she was a BIG woman.

So true!!! No child should be treated thisway no matter what.

They have it on viedeo tape wich helps his case. So sad for people like myself that the teacher would grab kids by their arms yank them to the front of the classroom and grab them by the neck and push them, also belittle them in frint ofthe classroom. But we have no video tape. That teacher need to be fired.

  • Tannia Chavez

This ready get me very upset!! I’m glad there were cameras to catch this in action. I hope she does get fired. I had an incident just like this with my daughter when she was in 1st Grade. Her teacher at that time at Hazel Strauch Elementary School here in Sacramento, CA a Twin Rivers School District use to grab my daughter by the neck, yank her arms and pull her to the board. This didn’t just happen to my daughter but other kids in her classroom. I did every step a parent needs to take and then more. I wished this never wouldn’t of happened to your son, but you are more lucky then other parents out there that doesn’t have a video about the incident. There’s soooooo much red tape a parent goes through to get a teacher fired. The Districts do it this way so the parents could give up. From a parent to another parent “DON’T GIVE UP!” This is very traumatic for the child who went through the abuse and for the parents. “DON’T GIVE UP!” this needs to STOP!!
