KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A worker trying to stop a shoplifter got more than he expected as the suspect reportedly pulled an ax on him, and the scary situation didn't stop at the store.
According to the police report, when the ax toting woman left a Dollar General store in the 7300 block of Prospect without paying, she went across the street, swinging the ax and tried to barge into someone's home.
All is quiet at the Dollar General Tuesday, but Monday at 2:00 p.m. police say a woman was caught stuffing items in a trash bag. When she left the store without paying, police say a store clerk followed her outside and asked her to return the items.
Instead of returning the merchandise, police say she pulled out an ax.
“The lady, she had a big old ax. She started swinging it across me so I'm like, ‘okay, I'll back up. I'm not trying to get hit by no ax now,’” witness Cyesha Gentry said.
Cyesha Gentry said she was on her front porch with her family when the ax swinging woman tried to get into her house.
“When the lady from Dollar General came out, she was like, ‘I'm calling the police on you.’ She tried to run up in our house and started waving the ax and was like, ‘y’all are gonna let me in.’ Just waiving the ax. We had babies out here and the kids were so frightened they ran inside the house,” Tiesha Gentry said.
Tiesha Gentry said she took cell phone video of the woman after she left their yard.
“She came over here and she tried to blend in. When she tried to blend in we told her to get away. And she started talking off the wall that she stole saying, ‘yeah, I got them. I got them.’” Tiesha Gentry said.
No one was hit with the ax and police arrested the woman several blocks away at Gregory and Prospect. A spokesperson for Dollar General says she cannot comment on the shoplifting incident, but says the company strives to provide a safe shopping experience and a safe work environment for its employees.
