KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City mother was convicted on Tuesday of trying to poison her twin baby girls with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and milk. The Clay County prosecutor said the crime happened in October two years ago.

Prosecutors say 23-year old Gloria Jones mixed rubbing alcohol with milk, giving it to her twin one-year old daughters. According to court documents, Jones told police she was overwhelmed with the twins and thought it would help calm them down because they were whiny.

Instead they ended up at Children's Mercy Hospital.

According to prosecutors, one of the twins had to be placed on a ventilator. Both girls survived and are now three years old. Prosecutors say neither child appears to have any lasting effects from the poisoning.

Clay County Prosecutor Dan White said in a statement on Tuesday that rubbing alcohol can be lethal in doses as low eight ounces for adults, and it doesn't take much to put a child at risk.

Jurors convicted the mother of two felony counts for endangering the welfare of a child. Jurors recommended Jones serve three years in prison on the first count and two on the second. She will face a judge for motions and sentencing in August.
