EARLHAM, Iowa (AP) — A 2-year-old girl was found face-down in a ditch filled with water in rural Dallas County and pronounced dead after being rushed to a Des Moines hospital.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Scott Bright says Deja Ramynke was playing with two other children Wednesday morning in front of a home about five miles north of Earlham when an adult noticed her missing.

Authorities were called and an Iowa State Patrol trooper found her face-down in a watery ditch, about 100 yards from the house.

The trooper started cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and the girl was taken by helicopter to Blank Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy.

Who in their right mind would allow a 2 year old child to play in a ditch with water and no adult supervision? Where was Mom, Dad or the babysitter? Somebody needs to face the music.

Ben — They didn’t ‘allow’ their 2 year old to play in the ditch. Just as parents don’t allow their 2 year old (or other small child) to go swimming alone. She wandered off into the ditch while playing with other children. It was an horrible accident. Kids can be quick and things can happen in a blink of an eye.

Kathy: If you are right and the child wondered off, that is just as bad as if her parents allowed her to play in the ditch. Someone should have been watching this child and whomever was to be watching her should be arrested for child neglect, endangerment and a few other charges. Don’t have children if you are not going to take care of them and that includes watching them every minute of the day.
