KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office was involved in a police chase Wednesday afternoon that ended in a crash between two civilian vehicles at Metropolitan Avenue, right in front of the ramp to northbound I-635.
At about 2:30 p.m. an off-duty KCK police officer spotted a stolen vehicle and reported it to a dispatcher. A Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy was in the area and attempted to pull the driver over, but they sped off instead.
The driver later exited from I-635 to Metropolitan and attempted to turn, but ended up hitting a SUV. The driver of the reported stolen vehicle then attempted to run, but was arrested after a brief foot chase. There was also a passenger in the stolen car who fled and is still at-large. That car caught fire after the two had bailed.
While serious injuries weren't reported, a 13-year-old passenger in the SUV had to be taken to a hospital because a parent wasn't present to refuse treatment for them. The 19-year-old driver did refuse treatment at the scene.
The ramp from I-635 NB to Metropolitan reopened shortly before 7 p.m. after being closed for investigation.
