Explosive device found in Clay County

MISSOURI CITY, Mo. – Clay County authorities responded to a report of an explosive device found near a residence in Missouri City.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office a citizen reported finding what he believed was a small homemade explosive device near the front door of a residence in the 400 block of Main Street in Missouri City around 8:15 a.m. on Thursday. The residence is located across from River Park and also near a playground.

Deputies secured the area and began an initial examination of the device, which appeared to be a homemade explosive containing shrapnel. Clay County authorities requested assistance from the Independence Police Bomb Squad, who used a robot to take control of the device and then safely disposed of it.

Detectives said they have no reason to believe the homeowner was targeted. The incident remains under investigation.
