OAK GROVE, Mo. -- Who's your hero? Sunday morning a local church dedicated its service to all who wear the uniform-- a salute to all those who protect and serve.
"You hear of like Batman, Superman, all that stuff, but these are the real heroes," said Kristina Mathis who attended Sunday’s special church service.
More than a thousand filled the pews of the New Life Church just of off Interstate 70 in Oak Grove, Mo. The congregation met to give thanks, and not just to the man above.
"I feel like it's important for the community to come together because you don't really know you need law enforcement, police, fire, EMS, military until you need them," said Pastor Barry Young who is also a chaplain with the Independence Police Department.
He said he wanted to give back to those who give so much of themselves.
"Every person that's ever got the uniform on puts their life at risk going to the scene, being at the scene," said Young.
One of those honored was Staff Sergeant Andrew Schueller with the Missouri Army National Guard Reserves.
"I joined up the Army just because I felt like it was the right thing to do at the time," said Staff Sgt. Schueller.
At least 1,500 attended Sunday's service.
