KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man is dead and a woman has been hospitalized following a police pursuit that ended in a car crash. The crash happened at 45th Terrace and Pittman Road at approximately 1:25 a.m. on Wednesday.

The chase started at 1:20 a.m. in Independence and ended in KC with officers pursuing a driver who was refusing to stop. The Independence Police Department says an officer was trying to stop the driver for an unspecified traffic violation in the area of 35th Terrace and Pittman when the pursuit began.

IPD contacted the Kansas City, Mo. Police Department at about 1:30 a.m. saying the crash had happened before they could catch the driver.

"Apparently during the pursuit Independence lost sight of the vehicle and then came upon the crash. When it started they didn't see who was in what seat," KCPD Captain Chris Sicoli explained.

The car flipped over and caught fire after crashing through a concrete barrier and falling down a ravine. A responding Independence officer extinguished the fire and helped the woman out of the car. Both she and the man were taken to a hospital where the man was pronounced dead.

The car had to be lifted out of the ravine by a crane. Now police are investigating to determine who was the driver and who was the passenger, though the preliminary belief is that the deceased man was the driver.

KCPD told FOX 4's Katie Ferrell at the scene that a TV crew from the show Cops was with Independence police and got footage of the crash aftermath. We're told the woman who was hospitalized is expected to live, police haven't formally identified either person from the pursued vehicle yet.
