Jesse Lewis died in the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting on Dec. 14, 2012. His mother, Scarlett Lewis, has since gone on an unexpected journey of hope and forgiveness.

Inspired by a simple three-word message that Jesse had written on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died: Norurting Helinn Love (Nurturing Healing Love), Scarlett found peace and began to understand that choosing love was the key to creating a healthy, safe, and happy world. She began the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation to develop programs to teach children and adults about the power each of us has to change our thoughts and choose a life without fear and hate.

On Monday she spoke more about her journey and the organization named in her son’s honor.
