KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police are investigating after a woman was found dead Tuesday morning in a home near 42nd and Forest in Kansas City, Mo. Police said she had been shot.

After she did not show up for work at a dog-grooming business, colleagues went to her home to check on her and found her dead.

"It's very sad because she was a very arm woman," said neighbor Connie Wilson.

The woman was known in the neighborhood partly because her house was so admired. The 49-year-old victim remodeled the rundown, historic house two years ago and turned it into a beautiful home.

"Everybody comments about how nice that it has changed, made that side of the block very, very nice and she decorated it with her flowers," said Augusta Wilbom, with the Manheim Park Neighborhood Association.

The woman came from Buckner, Mo. Neighbors say she loved to work in the neighborhood garden across from her home. She was also an independent consultant who sold handcrafted candles.

Last year on her facebook page, she wrote this post to her wall: "I feel privileged to be able to live in a house that has stood for over 100 years. It has been given a new life and a new purpose."

Neighbors say she rehabilitated the house with the help of a grant. She has an adult son and lived alone.

Police remained at her home all day on Tuesday collecting evidence and talking to neighbors. There is no suspect description at this time. They said it did not initially appear that there were any signs of forced entry. Anyone with information is urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816.474.8477.

"Right now we don't have any reason to; of why somebody may have been over here and done this, so we're still trying to determine that," said Capt. Tye Grant, KCMO Police Dept.
