The Crown Center Ice Terrace in Kansas City, Mo., is now open for the season. FOX 4's Matt Stewart braved the ice and spoke with skaters who were out for this year's opening.

"It's a lot of fun. People were talking about how this was their holiday tradition to kick it off. I figured since it was just me and him, this is going to be our new tradition," Sean Smith, skater, said.

Below the rink are eight miles of pipes filled with freon to keep the ice from melting.

This year is the 42nd year the Ice Terrace has been open. Cost is $6 for people age 5-60. Kids younger than 5 are free. Skate rental costs $3.

The rink is open until March 8. The rink opens at 10 a.m. Monday-Sunday.
