KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Firefighters responded to a house fire late Friday morning in the 3700 block of Roberts in Kansas City, Mo.

A 25-year-old neighbor told FOX 4 News he saw a woman on the roof screaming in Spanish, asking for someone to rescue her children.

He said ran over and broke out a window and could see flames inside the home. The neighbor said he managed to rescue the children. A boy reportedly suffered a cut on his head. The mother and her children were transported to an area hospital. The father returned home and joined his family after learning of the fire.

When firefighters arrived, the woman was no longer on the roof and credit the neighbor for helping her down.

The mother and father spoke with FOX 4's Megan Dillard and said that neighbor is their "hero."

It's unclear what started the blaze.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.

FOX 4 will have more on this story on FOX 4 News at 5 and 6.
