PARKVILLE, Mo. -- Their job is to protect and serve, but a couple of members of the Parkville Police Department go above and beyond. This holiday season is no different, they made sure one of Parkville's oldest residents was in the holiday spirit.

Police officers appearing on the porch of a modest home in Parkville isn't unexpected or unwelcome by Edwina Hughes. She's in her upper 80's, sharp as a tack, but doesn't get around like she used to. So Parkville officers routinely check on her.

However, Wednesday's visit came with gifts, and lots of them.

"She's always a giving person, so we thought we'd give back to her," explained Officer Nick Pence.

Officer Pence has visited Hughes for years and in all the visits, he had never seen her as down as she was recently. She shared the reasons why.

"I just felt bad because I didn't have any money and I didn't have anything, you know? And I thought, well, it's not going to be much; I can't do this and I can't do that, lord always provides," explained Edwina.

She's pretty sure God provided her with angels in the form of Officer Pence and Sergeant Laura Shadid. They decided to change Edwina's mood and bring Christmas to her.

They brought a Christmas tree and assembled it, pulled out a few strands of lights and strung them on the tree. Even some bright purple garland made its way around the new addition, and within minutes it was almost perfect. All it needed was a bow, a bow Edwina helped put on.

"She's a special woman and I've come to bond with her," said Officer Pence.

That is an understatement. They are now the best of friends and Edwina appreciates everything Officer Pence does and everything his coworkers did as well.

"It's very important and I'm grateful to you guys to think enough of me to come over and see all of you here," she said.

She's not just sentimental over the Christmas gifts, but the gifts of friendship and sincerity Officer Pence and the department give her year-round.
