LEAWOOD, Kan. – Parents are concerned after a loaded .45 caliber pistol magazine was found on the playground at an area elementary school.
On Tuesday, the magazine, which contained eight rounds, was found on the playground by a kindergarten student during recess at Leawood Elementary School, which is located at 2400 West 123rd Street in Leawood, Kansas. The student took the ammunition immediately to a teacher.
According to a letter sent to families by the school’s principal, upon locating the ammunition the administration immediately notified the district’s Director of Safety and Security as well as Leawood Police Department.
David Schmidt has children who attend both Leawood Elementary and Leawood Middle School, which are located next to each other.
"In this quiet neighborhood, you don't expect to hear about that,” said Schmidt.
The concerned dad has many questions about the disturbing discovery at his child's school.
"Where did it come from? Why is there not a gun attached to it and who's walking around with a 45 caliber pistol in Leawood?" said Schmidt.
Around 10 a.m. a thorough sweep of the school and grounds was conducted by police as a precaution, while students and staff were held inside the building. Officers also went next door and searched all lockers and the grounds at Leawood Middle.
"Our biggest concern was there might be a gun that would be associated with that magazine which was not found. No other items found that were with that pistol or related to that item," said Dan Carney with Blue Valley School’s Security.
