KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Secret Santa is popping up in random ways all over town, and now there's another one who people are calling the "layaway angel."
Dozens of families will get a huge holiday surprise this month thanks to a generous stranger. A secret Santa paid for more than $10,000 worth of toys and other gifts on layaway at one local Kansas City Walmart.
"They wanted to remain anonymous, but it was a couple that wanted to pay it forward and take care of some layaways for some families," said Robin Crump, a manager at the store.
A local couple came into the Kansas City Walmart off of 133rd street on Monday, December 15, to spread some holiday cheer.
"They did say that it was a copycat thing, that they saw on television and they said you know what if they did it, and it changed one person's life, it was all worth it," said Crump.
Crump says, to many of the people who received their layaway items, paid for by these good Samaritans, it was worth it.
"Just making the phone calls and talking to some of the individuals, I mean, you could hear the joy through the phone," said Crump.
The couple gave more than $10,000 dollars to pay off the layaways.
"They wanted to focus on children, and taking care of toys and bikes," Crump said.
Crump says many of the recipients thought she was joking.
"They did not believe me," she said. "Some of the individuals that I called, they said, you know what, things like this never happen to me."
But it was all true.
"It was very touching," said Crump. "Very heartwarming to see that we still have people in our community that look out for individuals outside of their everyday family."
Three other secret Santas each donated more than $50,000 to two Walmarts in Florida and one in Pennsylvania this week too.
