PORTAGE, Ind. -- A woman returned home on Christmas Day to find one of her pit bulls with blood on his mouth and her husband dead in their living room, covered in dog bites. Sister station WGN reports 40-year-old Eddie Cahill was mauled by his eight-year-old pit bull, Fat Boy, one of two he and his wife Blanca Rodriguez owned.

Animal control officers used a taser to subdue the dog and put Fat Boy down at the request of family. WGN reports that Rodriguez told a responding police officer on Thursday that the dog was violent, unpredictable and had asked Cahill to euthanize the dog in the past. However, on Friday family said what happened was a freak accident and Rodriguez told WGN that they never had problems with their dogs.

"They were playful dogs. One slept with the girls and the other slept with me and my husband," Rodriguez said.

She said the dogs had been given large bones and speculated that her husband may have been playing "keep away" which was not uncommon. Adamant that the mauling was an accident, Rodriguez said she didn't want her husband's death to cast the breed in a negative light.

"I don't want people to think bad of pit bulls. It was a freak accident. He loved those dogs," she said.
