KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the first time Thursday night, UMKC raffled off a semester of free tuition at a men’s basketball game. A giant check for the amount of one semester of tuition at UMKC had Marisa Costley’s name written all over it. All she did was attend the men’s basketball game.

“I'm usually the person with the bad luck so this opportunity came to me and I'm shocked and I'm still dumbfounded by it,” She says.

The sophomore didn’t even have plans to go to the game until her friends convinced her.

“I had a quiz I needed to do but I just did it later,” says Costely

Even when her name was called, Costley couldn’t believe it because luck was never on her side.

The disbelief continued when she called her parents in St. Louis about the good news.

A semester at UMKC is about $4,000. The psychology major took out loans to cover the cost.

“I'm going to be in debt for quite awhile so this is definitely going to help me out,” Costely said.

That’s 12-credit hours Costely no longer has to worry about.
